Hot Water in the North

Careful consideration of your hot water needs and flow requirements are needed to determine the use of either the ADK Series or the AHS Model Tankless Heater Units in our store.  Contact Us if you need assistance.

The ADK-14, is the work horse of the American Heat ADK-14  line of tankless water heaters. Designed for use in the sunbelt or southern portion of the United States, the   line of tankless water heaters can be used in multiple configurations to provide a greater heat rise for our customers in the colder, northern areas of our country. One ADK-12 American Heat unit can be used in applications supplying one shower or possibly a faucet and a shower with water restricting shower heads of 1.5 to 2.0 gpm. The heat rise for the ADK-14 around 95o F for one gallon per minute and 64o F in 1.5 gallons per minute. So, you can see that the heat rise in a single ADK-12 is restricted to less than 1.5 gpm if the incoming water temperature is 45-50o F. The solution in the past could be resolved with different American Heat ADK heaters and configurations of those heaters. For instance:

  • Two American Heat ADK heaters can be arranged in parallel where the incoming cold water pipe is bifurcated into a supply for each heater. Shut off valves on each cold water supply and each output side of the hot water supply assures a backup to the overall system.  If one ADK unit fails then the second ADK unit could be used as a single heater for the home. The parallel arrangement or configuration allows a greater flow or volume on the outlet or hot water side. Each requires a separate two pole, 60 amp circuit breakers. Consult an electrician for this type of application to assure adequate power in your electrical service panel.  Use the heat rise chart vs. gallons per minute to help evaluate your needs or situation. Use of a water restricting shower head with as little as 1.5 to 2.0 gpm is very useful.  Note that you may need more power yet and you can get that by checking our AHS Tankless units on this site.

  • Another configuration uses a ADK-1 unit such as the  ADK-12 unit in tandem with a smaller ADK-9 or  ADK-7 unit.  The smaller unit can be a "pre-warm" heater which passes along warmer water to be further heated by the next in-line ADK-14 unit.  Again, the use of water flow restricting devices help slow the flow of water through the heaters to give a better heat rise to that water.  Once again, get the consult of a qualified licensed electrician for this type of arrangement.

  • The use of the larger AHS units offer more flow through their 3/4" inlet and outlet vs. the ADK unit's 1/2" Inlet and Outlet.  The AHS series of heaters are self-regulating.  An AHS tankless heater uses an onboard microprocessor to regulate the heat that you can manually set with a digital keypad and display.  The AHS series offer more flow and hotter water.  Units range in size from 14 to 27 kilowatts.  The larger American Heat AHS Units are CSA approved for their use in Canada and ETL#834 listed and UL#499 comliant for your use here in the United States.  Click Here to link to the American Heat AHS Tankless Heaters.

  • Remember, more than one tankless unit may be required in your home dependant on your cold incoming water and the amount in gallons per minute required in your household.
